YouTube Rolls Out New PiP Fixes and Features

iOS, Android, and desktop users get smoother multitasking with new YouTube PiP update

New Delhi: YouTube has introduced a range of changes in 2025 to enhance its Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature across platforms, providing users with increased flexibility and ease of multitasking. The update is accompanied by better compatibility for mobile and desktop users and features a wide range of fixes for general bugs that earlier made the feature less reliable.

Wider Support for iOS and Android

On iOS/iPadOS 15 and later on iPhones and iPads, users can now experience smoother playback of PiP thanks to proper settings being enabled. The functionality needs to be enabled both in the device settings and within the YouTube app. With it enabled, PiP enables users to keep watching videos in a floating window as small as they are able to browse other apps or even when their device is locked.

Android users also enjoy enhanced support, particularly those on Android 15. The current version allows the ability to use two PiP windows at once—a handy addition for heavy multitaskers. Users will need to have YouTube set to have “Appear on top” permissions for full functionality.

Web and Desktop Functionality Increases

Desktop users are experiencing PiP integration across more major browsers. Chrome, Edge, Opera, Safari, Firefox, and Brave support PiP natively or with slight modifications. To pop a YouTube video into a smaller floating window, users can double-right-click it or use specific browser settings.Users of ChromeOS can turn on PiP by swiping down from full screen or using the overview key.

Notably, macOS and iPadOS Safari users can initiate PiP via a subtle icon on the video player’s overlay, enhancing accessibility.

Troubleshooting and Fixes

In response to user issues with lost PiP windows or nonresponsive controls, YouTube released an extensive troubleshooting guide. It offers fixes such as app cache clearing, updating the YouTube app or system WebView, and modifying system permissions. Its feature issues like PiP failing on mobile data or when connected to a VPN are also tackled, with region-based prohibitions as the main limitation.

Energy Efficiency Bonus

Surprisingly, YouTube’s PiP mode also has a battery-saving advantage. The inset window decreases processing load and screen power consumption, saving 15–20% of the battery compared to full-screen viewing—convenient for mobile viewers in motion.

The Verdict

With its 2025 enhancements, YouTube’s PiP capability is stronger, better-supported, and less difficult to diagnose than ever. As more mobile and desktop users bounce between tasks, YouTube’s recent enhancements leave no doubt: video streaming doesn’t need to come to a halt when the day gets busy.
