Another Pandemic Risk? Dr K.A. Paul Raises Alarm Over Russia Lab Death

Dr K.A. Paul raises concerns over an unexplained Russian lab worker death and alleged plague exposure, urging an independent probe and early action

New Delhi: Could an unexplained illness linked to a Russian anti-plague laboratory become a wider health concern? Global Peace Initiative founder Dr. K.A. Paul has urged authorities to investigate the death of laboratory technician Daria Shipilova and clarify reports of a possible exposure to plague bacteria.

Shipilova, 28, worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia. She died in Shelekhov on October 2 after developing severe pneumonia. Russian health officials have not confirmed plague as the cause and have classified the illness as pneumonia of unknown origin.

Questions emerged after reports claimed that Shipilova may have encountered plague bacteria during an alleged laboratory incident on September 25. Russian authorities have disputed those reports and denied that a laboratory accident caused the situation. They have also said that no microorganisms connected to Shipilova’s work were detected in her body.

Authorities have placed almost 200 possible contacts under medical observation as a precaution. Reports so far indicate that the people under observation have not developed symptoms and tests have remained negative. Russian officials have also said the epidemiological situation in the Irkutsk region remains stable.

Despite the official assessment, Dr. Paul has demanded an independent investigation. He said authorities and international institutions need to establish the facts before the situation develops into a larger public-health concern.

“The world cannot afford another COVID-like crisis caused by delays, lack of transparency or failure to act early,” Dr. Paul said.

He urged governments to learn from the COVID-19 pandemic and strengthen early-warning systems, disease surveillance and international cooperation. According to Dr. Paul, authorities should act on credible warning signs instead of waiting until a wider outbreak becomes evident.

The developments have attracted international attention, with reports indicating that the White House is monitoring the situation. Russian officials, meanwhile, continue to describe the regional situation as stable.

Dr. Paul also referred to his previous calls for accountability over the COVID-19 response and pandemic origins. He said transparency and scientific investigation remain essential when authorities face unusual disease events.

His comments also come amid his wider diplomatic efforts involving the Iran conflict. Dr. Paul said geopolitical tensions can affect energy markets and the global economy and called for continued diplomatic engagement.

He ultimately urged governments, public-health experts and international institutions to coordinate their response to emerging health and geopolitical risks.
