Trump Backs Sanctions Bill Targeting India’s Russian Oil Imports with 500% Tariff Threat

Proposed U.S. Legislation Could Reshape Global Energy Trade; India Engages Diplomatically to Safeguard Interests

New Delhi: 10 July 2025

U.S. President Donald Trump had indicated to be in full support of the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025 proposed legislation that may impose tariff increases of up to 500% on any countries’ imports including India for importing Russian energy products and continuing to do so. I am simply amazed that a bill with this scope and potential impact would be introduced in Congress by Senator Lindsey Graham. The law, if passed, would increase the economic pressure on Moscow by imposing penalties on countries that purchase Russian oil, gas, uranium and petroleum-based products.

India, which emerged as the second-largest buyer of Russian fossil fuels in May 2025importing energy products worth €4.2 billion, 72% of which was crude oil could face significant economic repercussions if the bill is enacted.

While the bill allows the U.S. President to grant 180-day waivers for national security considerations, Trump emphasized that enforcement would be “totally at my option.” Senator Graham has claimed strong bipartisan support, with 84 co-sponsors already backing the legislation in Congress.

In response, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has begun urgent diplomatic outreach to Washington, emphasizing India’s energy security needs and the strategic importance of stable oil supplies.

If passed, the legislation could redefine global energy alignments, pressuring countries like India to rethink their import strategies amid increasing Western efforts to isolate Russia economically.
