Jacks Stars as MI wins Match in Style

Mumbai turns up the heat midway through IPL 2025.
New Delhi: On April 17, Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by four wickets in a thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 encounter at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. This match saw MI’s clinical display marked by all-around brilliance from the Englishman Will Jacks, who bagged the Player of the Match award for batting and bowling feats.
Sunrisers’ Inning: Cautious and Accelerated
Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and elected to bat first, compiling a respectable 162 for 5 in a full 20 overs. The innings started on a good note as the openers tackled some early troubles to lay a decent enough foundation. With the arrival of Travis Head, the innings began to look fluent as he racked up 28 quick runs off of 20 balls (two fours and a six). But during the powerplay, it was Abhishek Sharma who was doing the damage, playing confidently on the up and accelerating with ground strokes and lofted drives. He scored a brisk 40 off 28 balls with 7 fours before Jasprit Bumrah sent him back.

After a very promising start, the middle order kept things together but could not accelerate as desired. Heinrich Klaasen contributed a 28-ball 37, yet without support, it cannot really be considered a finishing effort. The bowling from MI during the last overs really took the sting out of a strong finish for SRH.
The bowling plans were executed to perfection for the Mumbai bowling quartet. Jasprit Bumrah was as miserly as ever, giving away just 20 runs in 4 overs, but again, that was an accepted tactic. Will Jacks, bowling some splendid off-spin, had changed the whole complexion of the innings. He took 2 wickets for just 14 runs in 3 overs and severely dented the scoring rate in the middle overs while taking off two critical partnerships.
MI’s Chase: Calm, Composed, and Controlled
In pursuit of 163, MI commenced their innings at a slow tempo, with openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan taking time in gauging pitch conditions. Rohit appeared to be in control at times, accumulating 26 runs before being blindsided by Pat Cummins. Ryan Rickelton, with his chance, made the most of it, contributing 31 runs off 22 balls with the help of a couple of boundaries and keeping the scoreboard ticking.
But the innings that made a difference was from Will Jacks, who was calm as a figure of maturity and aggression, anchoring the chase. He came to the crease at a critical time, scoring a quick-fire 36 off 26 balls, playing orthodox strokes with the odd boundary. The sober manner in which Jack batted allowed Hardik Pandya to let loose with a roar, smashing 21 runs off just 9 balls in a fitting end to the match.

MI eventually reached 166 for 6 in 18.1 overs, despite some tough bowling from SRH captain Pat Cummins, who finished with 3 for 26 from four overs.
Will Jacks, shines and received the Man of the Match award.
Will Jacks had a spectacular performance on the field—great with the ball when he put the brakes on SRH’s scoring streak and aided MI with a calm innings at a time when it was important that everyone keep their cool during the chase. With all that, he was awarded Player of the Match; he is the complete all-rounder one finds in the match-winning performance.

Looking Ahead
Championed by this match, Mumbai Indians ascended the points table and gained momentum at a vital point in the tournament. The Sunrisers Hyderabad, on their part, would now look at their approaches for those middle overs during which they failed dismally to keep the run rate moving.
That game had everything that the IPL is known for—big hitting, close spells, great fielding, and, above all, down-to-the-wire cricket. This is just the beginning of the end as far as this series is concerned. If the opening match is any sign of the rest, fans are in for a lot of such nail-biting fixtures.
