Post-Crash Fear Grips Flyers: 41% Now Check Aircraft Model Before Booking Tickets

Following the fatal Air India crash in Ahmedabad that claimed 241 lives, air travelers across India are growing more cautious; concern over Boeing 787-8 model escalates.

New Delhi: June 19, 2025

The recent crash of an Air India flight in Ahmedabad has heightened fears for air travel in India. The loss of life of 241 of 242 passengers aboard one of India’s largest airlines has drawn some serious concerns for our airline safety.

A new survey conducted by Local Circles indicates that there has been a change in behaviour by air travel passengers since the crash. The survey indicated that 41% of respondents stated that they check the aircraft model now when purchasing their tickets, growing substantially from 10% in 2022. The shift in passenger behaviour indicates greater awareness and caution among air travellers in regard to flight safety.

Increased Concern About Airplanes
There was also an increase in concern identified by the survey results that related to the vehicle that was involved in the most recent aircraft loading incident (Boeing 787-8). An alarming finding outlined in multiple reports and by global aviation experts suggested that there were continuing mechanical problems reportedly with Boeing 787-8 aircraft and many air travellers were calling for a suspension of Boeing 787-8 aircraft.
More than half of survey respondents (56%) suggested the government temporarily ground all Boeing 787-8 aircraft until the government conducts a full review of the technical aspects of the aircraft. On the other hand, 34% said flights should continue unless definitive evidence of faults emerges.

What Do Flyers Take Into Account Before Book now?
Responses were collected from over 40,000 consumers in 294 districts across India. Highlights from the responses include:
• 73% of respondents compare ticket prices before booking
• 64% prioritized the reputation and reliability of the airline.
• 59% consider the flight time as a deciding factor.
• 41% now look into the aircraft type/model used.
• 5% did not provide a definitive answer.

What Can Restore Passenger Confidence?
Experts suggest that restoring public trust will require robust action by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). They recommend a comprehensive inspection of all 33 Boeing 787-8 aircraft in Air India’s fleet, along with a review of past maintenance practices.
Only after such steps can authorities truly determine whether these aircraft are fit to fly again — and if passengers can board without fear.
