Sonam Wangchuk Says He Will Join June 6 Protest if Education Minister Does Not Resign

Sonam Wangchuk has said he will join a June 6 protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar if Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan does not resign by June 5, citing concerns over education reforms and examination-related controversies

New Delhi: Education reformer Sonam Wangchuk has said he will join a planned protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on June 6 if Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan does not resign by June 5, escalating pressure amid ongoing debates over examination management and education reforms.

Wangchuk made the announcement through a video message shared on social media, where he said he would stand with members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a social media-driven movement that has called for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The group has been demanding accountability over issues linked to the education sector and has sought the resignation of the Education Minister.

Wangchuk Backs June 6 Protest

In his message, Wangchuk expressed concern over what he described as shortcomings in the implementation of education reforms. He referred to controversies surrounding examinations such as NEET, CUET and CBSE-related issues, arguing that authorities have failed to adequately address repeated concerns affecting students.

The activist said his support for the protest goes beyond individual examination controversies. According to Wangchuk, the larger issue is the quality of education and whether current policies are being implemented effectively enough to prepare future generations. He linked the discussion to India’s long-term development goals and stressed the need for stronger educational infrastructure, particularly at the school level.

Organisers plan to hold the protest at Jantar Mantar on June 6, a location frequently used for demonstrations in the national capital. Organisers have said the protest is intended to draw attention to concerns about the functioning of the education system and recent examination-related disputes that have affected students across the country.

Concerns Over Education Reforms and Exams

Wangchuk’s announcement came shortly after organisers hinted that a prominent public figure would join the campaign. His decision is likely to draw greater public attention to the planned demonstration, given his reputation as an education innovator and his long-standing involvement in education reform initiatives.

In his social media message, Wangchuk said he had sought assurances that the movement reflected the concerns of young people and was focused on issues affecting students. He also indicated that his participation would depend on whether any action is taken before June 5.

The protest has emerged at a time when discussions around examination management, student welfare and education reforms continue to generate public debate. Several education-related controversies over the past year have prompted calls for greater transparency and accountability within the system.

So far, there has been no immediate response from the Union Education Ministry regarding Wangchuk’s latest statement. Attention is now likely to focus on developments in the run-up to June 6 and whether the planned protest proceeds with the participation of the noted education reformer.
